Principles
People first
Product development should be driven by needs. Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should do it.
Do the research
Go to the source, and listen. See where the true opportunity lies. Don’t operate on assumptions as mistakes become increasingly expensive the longer you invest in a dead fish.
Measure it
Whatever you arrive at as the solution, set measures of success and track them. If goals aren’t achieved learn where the gaps exist and iterate. To achieve goals one needs to measure what is happening, and be informed in what will improve the performance.
Build systems
Bespoke one/off designs are slow and don’t create a benefit for scale. As one designs they should research and build in a way that makes elements reusable.
Follow the crowd
Create products that use established heuristics and patterns. Forcing your customers to learn a new way of doing things is a sure way to shrink the funnel.
Plan for habit
We want customers to repeatedly engage and retain, as a result we should think about needs and inputs that help maintain continued engagement with features.
